第80回国連総会第5委員会主要会期における議題136「2026年国連計画予算案」及び議題137「2026年計画策定」に関する山﨑大使のステートメント

 

Madame Chair,
 
First, I extend our appreciation to Secretary-General and his team in spearheading the UN80 initiative. At this significant juncture, the challenges we face are immense, yet we believe the opportunity to reshape and fortify our institution for future generations is within our grasp. Japan is unwavering in its commitment to work constructively alongside all Member States to ensure this bold reform not only proceeds but propels the UN towards becoming more effective, efficient, fit for purpose, and financially sustainable.
 
The UN80 reform is not merely a financial or structural undertaking; it is a profound opportunity to embody the values we champion. It presents a chance to advance rejuvenation, promote gender equality, and achieve geographical diversity including closing gap between the desirable range and actual staff numbers for under-represented countries. Japan is eager to see these principles pursued diligently throughout the reform process, ensuring that the UN truly reflects the diversity and dynamism of our global community. We count on the Secretary-General’s commitment and his appropriate discretion as the Chief Administrative Officer of the organization to have this time-binding exercise proceed in due time frame.
 
Finally, I wish to express our appreciation to the UN staff working hard in this difficult time of the world, particularly those in the fields, risking themselves. Their safety is the priority. The reality of the grounds are the essential elements to which we need to pay attention throughout this process.
