Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Thank you very much for your presence today. I am pleased to deliver these closing remarks at such a significant event where future leaders are united by a shared vision of a world without nuclear weapons.
I express my warmest congratulations to the second cohort of the YLF on joining this program. My heartfelt congratulations are also extended to the first cohort on your completion of the program.
My deep gratitude goes to H.E. Mr. Teburoro Tito, Permanent Representative of Kiribati, H.E. Ms. Maritza Chan Valverde, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Dr. Masao Tomonaga, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs as well as the UN staff, for your invaluable contributions and cooperation.
Let me thank Mr. Hayato Yamashita and Mr. Brandon Mata for sharing their stories, which powerfully demonstrate this program's effectiveness in fostering personal growth and studying nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The success of the first cycle is also evident in the number of over 8,400 applications for the second cycle. We are delighted to see their hard work has born fruit which is now being passed on to the next generation.
Dear members of the second cohort,
The bonds and networks you will build with your peers from 61 countries will be a significant asset in your careers. Through discussions and activities on a wide range of issues, you will gain a better understanding of the complexities of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation within the international community and develop the ability to explore your own solutions. The YLF is a platform for you to grow into future leaders in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation policy.
The goal of a world without nuclear weapons is not easily achieved. However, as long as there are motivated and capable young people like yourselves, it is by no means a fantasy. Even when facing tough challenges, do not give up. Instead, build on what you have learned and work together with your colleagues.
The Government of Japan is committed to leading the way to our shared goal. And we have a strong belief that cultivating young leaders is essential to achieve that. Let me stress that Japan, in close cooperation with the UN, will continue to strongly support this fund, acting as a partner in your learning and growth.
Lastly, we sincerely hope for your success and look forward to seeing each of you make your own contribution to the world.
Thank you very much.
