ベサックデー記念イベントにおける山﨑大使ステートメント

令和8年5月12日

(As delivered)

Most Venerable Pannakara, Venerable Monks, Excellencies,

It is an honour to speak on this occasion as we commemorate the International Day of Vesak. I would like to thank the Permanent Representatives of  Sri Lanka and Thailand for organizing this annual event, which provides us the opportunity to collectively reflect on the spirit of Buddhism.

Since its introduction in the 6th century, Buddhism has had a profound influence on shaping many aspects of Japan’s history, culture, and arts. Buddhist temples in Japan traditionally celebrate Vesak Day by holding “Flower Festivals,” which is a long-standing practice dating back to the early 7th century.

Today, the teachings of Buddhism continue to guide and inspire people around the world, contributing to fostering mutual respect and tolerance. On the other hand, we are witnessing various threats to human security and human dignity that are being exacerbated by conflict, hatred, and division. In this context, the teachings of Buddhism serve as a poignant reminder of the foundational values of peace, harmony, and compassion.

The United Nations plays an imperative role in alleviating suffering and fostering peace and solidarity among people. Japan will continue to work alongside the UN and international partners toward these shared values.

I would like to conclude by offering my best wishes to those celebrating Vesak Day and expressing my sincerest hope that this auspicious occasion will renew our commitments and efforts to overcome global crises with peace and mutual respect.

I thank you.
