ガザ情勢に関する安保理決議案採決後の山﨑大使による投票理由説明(EOV)

令和6年3月25日

(As delivered)

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic, even during the holy month of Ramadan, with high levels of food insecurity, the imminence of famine and nearly 1.5 million people sheltering in Rafah, struggling each day for their survival. We deeply mourn the tens of thousands of lives lost in the conflict starting from the October 7th terrorist attack, and thereafter on the ground.

In this vein, it is absolutely essential for the Security Council to demand an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. We, all Council members, also need to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs. This is why Japan, as one of the co-penholders, has tabled the draft resolution.

We welcome that the Council was able to pass a resolution proposed by the E-10 today.

In addition, we strongly support the ongoing diplomatic efforts, in particular the “4-party talks”, towards a ceasefire in connection with the release of all remaining hostages.

We believe that ceasefire could pave the path towards sustainable peace and stability in the region, which is what the international community voices to us everyday. Japan will continue to work at the Council to achieve that path.

I thank you.
