国連事務総長の2026年優先事項ブリーフィング会合における山﨑大使ステートメント
令和8年1月15日

(As delivered)
Thank you, Madam President.
I also thank Secretary-General Guterres for sharing his priorities for 2026. Japan fully supports the SG’s vision for a more effective and resilient United Nations during these complex times.
The year 2026 is historically significant for Japan, marking 70 years since our admission to the United Nations in 1956. Over these decades, Japan has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the UN and adhered to the principles of the UN Charter, evolving into a proactive contributor to international peace, security and prosperity. As we celebrate this milestone amidst global uncertainty, we reaffirm our consistent and robust determination to sustain the international order based on the rule of law and support the UN's work.
The UN faces unprecedented challenges. I commend Secretary-General Guterres for his endeavor, particularly through the UN 80 initiative. UN reform cannot be realized without the firmest commitment and concrete actions taken by the whole UN system. Japan will actively engage in further works to find the way forward.
Madam President,
For the UN to remain relevant in today’s dire geopolitical reality, Japan continues to advocate for urgent reform of the Security Council. The Council must be transformed through expanding its permanent and non-permanent categories, and we must move towards text-based negotiations as soon as possible.
Equally important is our progress toward the 2030 Agenda. Japan will accelerate its efforts to achieve the SDGs including through the lens of “Human Security.” To ensure no one is left behind, stronger cooperation is necessary in traditional areas such as poverty and health, as well as new challenges including AI and digital technologies, while tackling issues related to financing for development.
Lastly, as we approach the selection of the next Secretary-General, its process must be conducted with the highest level of transparency, inclusivity, and predictability to ensure broad support to the next leader in this challenging time.
Japan is ready to work with all Member States and the Secretary-General to make 2026 a year of decisive action and renewed hope.
Thank you, Madam President.
