Statement by H.E. Mr. YAMANAKA Osamu

At the Main Part of the 77th Session of the Fifth Committee
Organization of Work
3 October 2022
(Check against delivery)
Mr. Chair,
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you, Ambassador Philippe Kridelka of Belgium, and all the bureau members on your elections to these very important positions. We are confident that you will guide this Committee towards a successful conclusion of our programme of work. I also wish to thank Ambassador Mher Margaryan and the outgoing bureau members for their hard work during the 76th session. And as always, we are grateful to the Secretariat of the Fifth Committee led by Mr. Lionel Berridge for their efficient and professional work.
Mr. Chair,
Today, we have before us various pressing and complex agenda items, including the review of the annual budget cycle, the urgent need to support the activities of UNAMA, as well as to ensure global food security. We should strive to be even more efficient, effective, and adept in the Fifth Committee in order to tackle these immense and immediate tasks ahead of us under the leadership of the Chair, taking advantage of lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and improving our working methods continuously.
Since the approval of the programme budget of 2022, the global community has been facing a number of unprecedented challenges, such as the situation in Ukraine, soaring prices, food insecurity, and the lingering COVID-19. We should strive to strengthen and enable this Organization to address evolving global needs, working outa nimble, responsive, and accountable budget.
Mr. Chair,
Japan believes it is of the utmost importance for the UN to deliver its mandate effectively. In our deliberations, we will continue to call for budgetary discipline, which is fundamental for the Organization to operate and deliver its mandate properly, effectively, and sustainably. My delegation remains committed to having constructive discussions based on this principle.
Mr. Chair,
While the negotiations of this session may be challenging, your skillful leadership I am sure, will guide us to accomplish a timely and consensual outcome, following the long-established tradition of this Committee.
I would like to conclude my statement by reassuring you that my delegation will spare no effort to that end and will engage in all the discussions faithfully, positively, and constructively.
I thank you, Mr. Chair
