国連女性機関(UN Women)執行理事会2022年第2回定期会合における山中大使ステートメント

令和4年9月13日
Mr. President,

I would like to start by welcoming Ambassador Muhith to the Executive Board. Japan looks forward to working closely with you.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the opening statements by Mr. President and Madam Executive Director, as well as to the UN Women Executive Board Secretariat colleagues for convening this second regular session.

The global situation of women and girls is dire due to compounded threats to human security. Japan applauds UN Women’s ongoing efforts in responding to the increasing needs of women and girls on the ground, most recently seen in Ukraine, Afghanistan and in neighboring countries, as introduced by Madam Executive Director. Japan provided about 13.8 million USD to UN Women this year, including support to Afghanistan, which provides protection and life-saving services to survivors of violence, including gender-based violence (GBV), and IDPs, as well as supporting the economic empowerment of women through livelihood skills training. Japan reconfirms its commitment to respond to crises in partnership with UN Women.

I am encouraged by the statement of the Executive Director on UN Women’s successful achievement in its policy and coordination mandate. In this relation, I am glad to share a significant example of UN Women’s contribution. Japan and Sierra Leone submitted a new resolution focusing on access to justice, remedies and assistance for sexual violence survivors, the very first resolution under this theme to the 76th Session of the General Assembly, which was adopted by consensus on 2 September. During the drafting of the zero draft, UN Women provided valuable input and advice to the text. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express our sincerest appreciation to UN Women colleagues for their tireless support.

I am also delighted to announce that Japan is going to host the sixth World Assembly on Women, WAW! on 3 December this year in Tokyo. During WAW!, world and national leaders as well as leading experts in various fields will have discussions on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through these opportunities, Japan wishes to continue to strengthen partnerships with UN Women, other entities and Member States to work for the shared mission.

Japan reaffirms its commitment to support UN Women to play an effective role in coordination across the UN system.

Thank you.
