2023年UNDP年次会合における山中大使ステートメント

令和5年6月20日
I thank UNDP and Administrator Mr. Steiner for convening this important event.

The rule of law is facing serious challenges. Because of this, Japan held an open debate on the rule of law under its presidency of the Security Council in January this year.

It is highly valued that UN agencies are strengthening their partnerships under the "New Vision for the Rule of Law". In particular, as the UNODC representative, Mr. Lemahieu, noted today, Japan welcomes collaboration between UNDP and UNODC, and looks forward to seeing increased synergies between the work of the two agencies.

The rule of law, particularly the justice system, underpins people's lives, livelihoods and dignity, and plays a fundamental role in ensuring human security. Therefore, Japan strongly supports UNDP’s work on a people-centered approach to justice.

Japan also plays a part in strengthening rule of law partnerships through its Justice Affairs Diplomacy initiative, as part of our coordinated diplomatic approach, the Ministry of Justice will hold a Ministerial Forum in Tokyo next month. It will bring together justice ministers from ASEAN and G7 member states for the first time in history.

It is also important to highlight the roles played by civil society and the private sector to foster a culture of lawfulness. In this regard, Japan has been supporting the Global Project on Business and Human Rights since last year to promote responsible business conduct.

Japan will continue to preserve and promote the rule of law and human rights through the partnership with UNDP.

Thank you.
