国連女性機関(UN Women)執行理事会2024年年次会合における山中大使ステートメント

令和6年6月18日

Madam President,

I would like to start by expressing my appreciation for the opening statements by you and by Madam Executive Director, and for her comprehensive annual report.

As the Executive Director’s report points out, the situation of progress of SDG 5 is alarming. In the current global situation of women and girls, which is at a critical juncture due to compounded threats to human security, Japan is contributing 18.1 million USD to UN Women this year. Japan commends UN Women’s ongoing efforts in global response, especially in crisis situations, and trusts that UN Women will continue its efforts in enhancing programme and project management efficiency and effectiveness at the Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices. In this relation, I would like to ask about UN Women’s views on how to close the implementation gaps of SDG 5, including what more role CSW can play in this effort.

Madam President,

I am pleased to hear that the integrated approach of the Strategic Plan 2022-2025 is driving results and improving organizational efficiencies and effectiveness with increased transparency. At the midpoint of the current plan, Japan values  the assessments in the report, and reaffirms its commitment to constructively engage in the discussions to shape the next plan. As many societies are aging, Japan would like to see UN Women have a greater role in helping and empower older women in the next Strategic Plan who, we believe, shouldn’t be left behind.

On the Executive Board, I appreciate the JIU review on oversight and governance, and note its recommendations to define the responsibilities and roles of the Board and its members, which are said to be currently lacking. Japan stands ready to discuss with the Board’s members on these issues.

Madam President,

As the world faces emerging security issues, the importance of implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda is ever more increasing. As a Security Council member, Japan reiterates its appreciation and highlights the importance of UN Women’s vital role in advancing this agenda in the Council and also on the ground.

Japan reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the entity, other Member States, and stakeholders in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women at different processes of the UN, including the Summit of the Future and CSW.

Thank you.
