第16回障害者権利条約締約国会合サイドイベントにおける山中大使挨拶
令和5年6月14日
Distinguished Participants, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to extend my gratitude to Down Syndrome International, Inclusion International, and the Permanent Mission of Poland for organizing this event.
Japan is committed to supporting persons with disabilities, including persons with Down syndrome. Last year, the Government of Japan supported the adoption of the "Easy-to-understand communication" resolution. We hope this resolution helps to increase accessibility for persons with intellectual disabilities and results in their further participation in society.
The Japanese government shares with the public good practices of reasonable accommodation based on the Act for Eliminating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities on its website. One of the practices introduced is the use of communication boards, illustrations and photographs designed to help facilitate communication with persons who have difficulty in understanding, including persons with intellectual disabilities.
On the margins of COSP16, the Japanese Mission is co-hosting a Down syndrome photo exhibition from June 12th to 16th in front of the Vienna café. Japanese photographer Fumio Nabata captured in photos the smiles of children with Down syndrome, which vividly display, without words, the potential and positive energy of those children. Please take a moment to visit the exhibition.
In closing, I hope that this event contributes to further enhancing the social inclusion of persons with disabilities.
I thank you.
