国連女性機関(UN Women)執行理事会2023年第1回定期会合における山中大使 ステートメント

令和5年2月13日

Mr. President,

I would like to start by congratulating Ambassador Kyslytsya on his assumption of the Presidency, as well as the assumption of the new Vice Presidents. Japan looks forward to working closely with the new Bureau Members and the Executive Board members.

First, I would like to commend UN Women for its continued global response to compounding threats, as introduced by Madam Executive Director, which pose threats to human security as well. In response to the growing needs of women and girls on the ground, Japan is providing approximately 16.6 million USD to UN Women this month to support women and girls throughout the world. Projects will be implemented in Afghanistan, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Moldova, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka and Yemen. There will also be regional projects in the Arab Region, the DRC and Uganda, as well as in Ukraine and its neighboring countries.

In this context, I would like to thank Madame Executive Director for the update on her recent visit to Afghanistan. Japan continues to count on her leadership in this critical situation, and reconfirms its commitment to ensuring the well-being and human rights of the people of Afghanistan.

Second, I am pleased to inform you that the Sixth World Assembly for Women, WAW!2022, which Japan hosted in Tokyo on 3 December last year under the theme of “Mainstreaming Gender into a New Form of Capitalism” was a success. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the participation of Madame Executive Director and leaders from Member States who contributed to the fruitful discussion. The recommendations made during WAW! are now available as a UN document, and I hope that this will lead to further discussions with our partners.

Finally, I would like to briefly touch on the upcoming CSW, which will focus on innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age. Japan has been at the forefront of this agenda, both domestically and globally, and looks forward to an active discussion with UN Women, Member States, and civil society partners during CSW67.

Thank you.
