ベサックデー記念パネルディスカッションにおける梅津大使ステートメント

令和8年4月30日

Excellencies, Distinguished Participants,

It is an honor to speak as we gather today to commemorate the International Day of Vesak and examine how the teachings of Buddhism can contribute to strengthening global peace and cooperation. I would like to thank Ambassador Harish and the Permanent Mission of India  for organizing this event. I also thank the speakers for their insightful remarks.

Buddhism has had a profound influence on shaping many aspects of Japan’s history and culture, dating back to its introduction in the mid-sixth century. Today, Buddhist temples in Japan carry on the tradition of celebrating Vesak Day through “Flower Festivals,” where celebrants commemorate the birth of Buddha by pouring sweet tea over sacred statues decorated with flowers.

Buddhism’s long history and heritage show how the emphasis on compassion, non-violence, mindfulness, and interdependence of all beings continues to resonate with individuals and societies across time and global circumstances. As we witness various threats to human security and human dignity exacerbated by conflict, hatred, and division, the teachings of Buddhism serve as a poignant reminder of the foundational  values of peace, harmony, and mutual respect.

The international community should look to Buddhist teachings and spirit for a path towards resolving issues in the international community.

Multilateralism with the UN at its core has been a critical driver of global cooperation and dialogue, and it remains the only path toward peace governed by the rule of law. The international community must renew its collective commitment to multilateralism, recognizing the interconnectedness of nations and people.

Japan reaffirms its commitment to working alongside the UN and international partners, especially all those countries who are here,  to alleviate global suffering and achieve lasting peace built on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation.

On this auspicious occasion of Vesak Day, I express my sincerest hope that we may all draw on our spiritual ideals to cultivate peace and compassion in each of our hearts.

I thank you.
