Taking this opportunity, we would like to reassure High Representative Schmidt and his office of Japan’s unwavering support.

The brutal conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina came to an end in 1995. Since then, the country has transitioned from conflict to peace. Sustaining peace and stability is a prerequisite, not only for the country’s future development and prosperity, but also for those of the Western Balkans and beyond.

Japan, as a proud member of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) Steering Board, strongly supports Bosnia and Herzegovina's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation. Our support for nation-building and national reconciliation efforts continues to this day.

Notwithstanding our consistent policy to stand with Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have some concern about the recent development with heightened tension in the country.

We reiterate that any attempt to undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement should be avoided. In this regard, we appreciate the role of High Representative, and strongly urge all parties to continue dialogues in a peaceful and constructive manner.

Let us renew our steadfast commitment to supporting the Western Balkans' accession to the EU, which will contribute to the stability and prosperity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region as a whole.
