Thank you for giving me the floor. While all proposals under this cluster attract Japan's strong interest, as one of the Co-Chairs of the Group of Friends on Education and Lifelong Learning, I will focus my intervention on education.
Education is not only a matter of education ministers. So, we strongly support the holding of a Summit on Transforming Education. It will be critical against the backdrop of a new generation of human security threats in the Anthropocene, not limited to COVID-19, which should all be tackled by empowering individuals through the solidarity of international community.
As the SG made clear yesterday, it is not going to be an intergovernmental meeting. So, it should be classified as a high-level event. In view of the short preparation time, we support it to be an SG-led event. At the same time, we want the meeting to be impactful and create momentum to further develop our common agenda on education.
The Group of Friends on Education and lifelong Learning is a NY-based group of ambassadors with a wealth of ideas and networks on education, who are willing to contribute to the success of the Summit. We listened very carefully to Ms. Giannini, ADG of UNESCO, and we are eager to know more about the preparation process, which should be open and inclusive, all be it a meeting to be hosted by the SG.
In particular, we wish to know more on how the newly established Global Cooperation Mechanism for Education is expected to play its role in the lead-up to the Summit and in its follow-up.
Thank you.
