(As delivered)
Thank you, Moderator.
We thank you for this opportunity to share good practices and proposals to support innovation and technology for adaptation and furthering the SDGs.
While working on our own national STI for SDGs Roadmap, Japan believes that it is important to strengthen international partnerships in STI toward the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.
Japan has experience in overcoming various challenges in its economic development by fully utilizing STI. Based on this experience, Japan has been cooperating in science and technology to solve problems in developing countries through the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development, abbreviated as “SATREPS”, since 2008.
SATREPS aims to produce research outcomes of practical benefit to both local and global communities by combining competitive research funding for science and technology projects and official development assistance (ODA). Some good practices of SATREPS include promotion of a low-carbon society through the development of geothermal exploration technology in Indonesia, and elucidation of the mechanism of lead contamination and development of prevention and environmental restoration technologies in Zambia.
Furthermore, Japan has been actively supporting the Global Pilot Programme on STI4SDGs Roadmaps, particularly in Kenya and India among the five pilot countries. In order to expand STI cooperation and accelerate progress by leveraging synergies among the pilot countries, it is important to promote collaboration with various stakeholders at local, national, and global levels, including the private sector, academia, research institutes, and civil society. It is also vital to set clear resource mobilization goals.
By learning good practices from various mission-oriented innovation approaches, we hope that more Member States will be interested in developing STI4SDGs Roadmaps in line with their national action plans and other development supports and join the initiatives of the international community toward resolving extensive global issues.
I thank you.
