Statement by H.E. Ambassador MIKANAGI Tomohiro
Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations
At the Informal meeting of the plenary to hear a briefing on the UN80 Initiative
Thank you Madame President.
Japan appreciates the efforts made by the Secretariat for ensuring transparency in the UN80 Process and thanks DSG and other briefers for the informative briefing.
Preserving expertise of each entity while enhancing coordination and efficiency is a big challenge in any reform of organizations. In this regard, I would like to make two quick points.
First, regarding the Regional Reset and UN Country Team Reconfiguration, Japan believes that how to strengthen the RC System is the main issue, and Japan supports RCs' role in improving coordination. we are making efforts in understanding the current state of the RC system so that we can constructively engage in the discussion. In this regard, we appreciate today's presentation which maps out the current state of RC system and I look forward to receiving the presentation later for more detailed examination.
Second, on the merger of UN organs, we appreciate the Secretariat's efforts to maintain the existing mandates of each organ while pursuing rationalization through reducing unnecessary duplication. I took careful note of the explanation on the need for eventual GA resolution in case of merger. In this regard, I would like to reiterate the importance of maintaining existing mandates and also of ensuring the role of respective boards in the consideration of assessment of various options.
In closing, Japan agrees with other Member States emphasizing the importance of transparency and very much appreciates regular briefing like this. We also appreciate the online tools to track the progress and look forward to engaging in the discussion on the UN80 in the coming months.
I thank you.
