第44回情報委員会における木村大使ステートメント

令和4年5月4日
(As delivered)
Thank you, Mr. Chair.

Allow me to start by expressing our deep gratitude to Ambassador Cristian Espinosa of Ecuador for adeptly steering the work of this Committee. I also wish to extend my gratitude to Ms. Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Global Communications, for her informative briefing.

Mr. Chair,

COVID-19 is still one of the greatest concerns to overcome and threats to human security we have encountered, affecting individuals across all borders. At the same time, however, we recognize the progress that has been made in ensuring business continuity.  Japan commends the Department of Global Communications and their tireless efforts over the past two years in  adapting to the situation as required by digital diplomacy. The figures shared on the increase of public engagement in UN affairs are noteworthy, and we fully support the Department in continuing its online outreach.

However, the digital world is not without its challenges. Amidst a scourge of disinformation, the Department launched the UN Global Communications Strategy, countering falsehoods and equipping the public with accurate and reliable data. Japan actively participated in campaigns such as Pledge to Pause, and strongly supports all such measures to curtail the ongoing infodemic.

Mr. Chair,

The goals of the Department could not be achieved without the vast global network of UN Information Centres and Resident Coordinator Offices, disseminating information on UN activities in local languages. They are instrumental in reaching out directly to the people of the Member States, telling human stories on the work of the UN and its core values. In this respect, I wish to commend UNIC Tokyo and highlight an achievement made by Ms. Kaoru Nemoto, Japan Director of the UNIC Tokyo who has been presented the “Person of the Year Award” by the Public Relations Society of Japan for the year 2021. She has been highly praised for her work on promoting UN activities and the importance of SDGs.

Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge the exceptional efforts the Department has made in assisting with the work of revitalization. Japan has followed the thematic briefings of the Department on this matter, and shares its goals in making the role of the United Nations more visible to the public. We especially take note of the creative measures the Department undertook in promoting the work of the Assembly at Expo 2020 Dubai, and look forward to working together as we approach Expo 2025 Osaka.

To conclude, let me assure you, Mr. Chair, that Japan is fully committed to working with the members of this committee and the Department of Global Communications in a constructive manner throughout this session.

I thank you, Mr. Chair.
