国連女性機関執行理事会2019年年次会合における川村大使ステートメント
令和元年6月18日
(As delivered)
Madame President,
We commend UN-Women under the leadership of Executive Director for the overall positive results in the first year of implementing the Strategic Plan.
We expect UN-Women to keep playing an active role to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women not only for member states, but also across the UN system in collaboration.
In this regard, I would like to raise the following three points regarding the future work of UN-Women.
First, implementation of the strategic plan should be outcome-oriented. We expect to see more concrete outcomes leading to gender equality and women’s empowerment for the coming three years.
Second, while we commend UN-Women recording its highest revenue, we hope that UN-Women will continue to diversify its funding sources. In this regard, we take positive note of recent efforts by UN-Women to enhance its donor base by strengthening ties with private companies, foundations and other stakeholders.
Third, we hope that UN-Women will continue its efforts to enhance accountability, efficiency and effectiveness in its activities. We believe this is important for UN-Women to garner more confidence and trust from donor-contributors and taxpayers. Having said that, I would like to ask UN-Women what kind of measures will be taken to improve date collection, which the annual report indicates as a challenge to address performance.
Madame President,
Before concluding, I would like to mention that as this year’s G20 president, Japan will host the G20 summit meeting next week in Osaka and sincerely welcomes Executive Director Madam Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka’ visit to Japan in this occasion.
Women's empowerment is essential for achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Discussions under the Japanese Presidency will be made under the following three pillars: (1) implementation of G20 commitments including those related to women's labour participation, (2) enhancing support for girls' and women's education including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and, (3) engagement with women business leaders and entrepreneurs.
Japan will continue to take a positive role in championing women’s agendas under the strong commitment of Prime Minister Abe, and will work closely with UN-Women and the Member States in this regard.
I thank you.
