Madame President,“We lost everything”, a lady in the OCHA’s video said and appealed for our support.
As a person from another disaster-prone country on the globe, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the people of Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe for the lives lost in the wake of the destruction caused by Cyclone Idai.
In response to the urgent humanitarian assistance on the ground, and Japan has joined international efforts to assist in disaster-relief. Our government has sent and handed over relief goods such as tents and blankets to areas of Malawi and Zimbabwe affected by severe flooding.
We have also dispatched the Disaster Relief Expert team to help with relief coordination efforts and a Medical Experts team. And they have started working on the field of Mozambique for humanitarian needs.
Madame President,
For the way forward, Japan will host the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development or TICAD7 in August. This being the seventh round of TICAD, I would like to underline that Japan has worked—and will continue to work—closely with African countries on reducing vulnerabilities and further enhancing resilience for its development.
As the scope of the situation in southern African continues to unfold, I would like to reiterate Japan’s continued commitment to disaster relief as well as to humanitarian efforts in the wake of natural disasters like Cyclone Idai and others. Japan would like to lead the discussions on reducing risks and building resilience towards achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, learning from the experiences this time along with those of ourselves.
