国連女性機関2021年第2回定期会合における石兼大使ステートメント

令和3年9月14日
Mr. President,

I would like to start by congratulating Ambassador Turay, on his election. Japan, as a bureau member, looks forward to working closely with him.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the opening statement by Madam Patten, the acting Executive Director, which, in our view, depicts well the imminent priorities of UN Women; COVID-19, Afghanistan and Strategic Plan for 2022-2025.

Please allow me to elaborate.

First, on COVID-19. The pandemic continues to pose a tremendous threat to human security worldwide by exacerbating pre-existing challenges, particularly for the most vulnerable people including women and girls. Japan expects UN Women to play an effective role in monitoring the negative impacts of COVID-19 on women to ensure they will never be left behind in the response and recovery processes. We look forward to the new data to be released from the Global COVID-19 Gender Response Tracker.

Second, on Afghanistan. Safeguarding the rights of women and girls is among the most urgent issues. We must preserve the gains of the past two decades, and continue to promote the empowerment of women and girls. UN Women's role has never been so critical. Japan urges UN Women to coordinate and collaborate with other UN agencies so that the UN presence as a whole will be fully capacitated on the ground to deliver for the protection and empowerment of women and girls.

Third, Japan welcomes the new Strategic Plan, which contains various recommendations to effectively respond to the emerging global challenges. In particular, Japan supports the comprehensive and integrated approach that cuts across the three pillars of the UN, namely peace and security, human rights, and development, as well as the four focus areas. We look forward to UN Women's leadership in reinforcing gender perspectives in the UN responses to natural disasters and conflicts.

To conclude, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the staff of UN Women for their tireless efforts for realizing gender equality and promoting women’s empowerment in this difficult time. Japan trusts that UN Women will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of its work under the new Strategic Plan and the new Executive Director. Japan reaffirms its commitment to working in close partnership with UN Women.

Thank you.
