総会非公式会合における石兼大使によるミャンマー人権状況に関するステートメント

Mr. President,
Thank you for convening this meeting. I would like to start by thanking the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General, Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, for her briefing. Japan commends her tireless work to engage Myanmar and cooperate with the Member States, especially in the region, and hopes that the situations will allow her earliest visit to Myanmar.
Japan expresses concern about the continued lack of action to improve the situation since the coup d’état. Japan strongly condemns the use of violence which is causing a large number of deaths, despite repeated calls for restraint by the international community. Also, we are deeply worried about Myanmar military’s decision to proceed with the execution of pro-democracy activists following their death sentences. Japan strongly urges the Myanmar military to: 1) immediately stop the violence; 2) release detainees; and 3) swiftly restore Myanmar’s democratic political system.
At the same time, humanitarian challenges facing the people of Myanmar needs to be addressed. Since the coup d’état, Japan has provided approximately 47.7 million US dollars in humanitarian assistance to these people.
In the same vein, Japan highly commends the Government of Bangladesh for generously accepting the displaced persons from Myanmar. Return to democracy and a conducive environment to enable early, voluntary, and dignified repatriation have been eagerly awaited.
Japan sincerely hopes that the human rights and humanitarian situation in Myanmar will improve in a manner that reflects the will of the people of Myanmar. Japan will continue to work closely with the international community including ASEAN and make utmost efforts to improve the situation in Myanmar.
