Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the outset, I would like to express my appreciation to the organizers, and to the champions and partners of the Universal Health Coverage movement, for making this event possible. I would also like to congratulate the successful multi-stakeholder hearing organized by the President of the General Assembly toward the upcoming High-level Meeting on UHC.

Universal Health Coverage embodies the notion of ‘No One Left Behind’, the core principle of the SDGs, and underpins the concept of human security, which Japan subscribes to. As we convene the High-Level Meeting on UHC in September, we must bring together all our efforts to ensure UHC as a fundamental enabler for achieving the SDGs.

This is why we, together with interested Member States here in New York, have created the Group of Friends of UHC and Global Health to build momentum and prepare ourselves through a series of briefings for the upcoming High-Level Meeting on UHC and beyond.

With the Key Asks and the voices we heard from across the UHC movement at the hearing today in mind, let us keep the momentum and work towards the most impactful political declaration on Universal Health Coverage that our leaders can adopt when they meet in September.

Japan will maximize every opportunity leading up to the HLM in September and beyond, including the G20 Summit in Osaka in June, as well as the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD VII, in Yokohama in August, to promote the achievement of UHC by 2030 together with all of you here today.

I thank you.
