Statement by H.E. Ambassador YAMAZAKI Kazuyuki, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Security Council Emergency Briefing, Agenda item “The situation in the Middle East” (situation in Iran and Israel)
2024/4/14

(As delivered)
Thank you, Madam President.
I also thank Secretary-General for his timely briefing on this urgent matter.
We are now witnessing an extremely dangerous situation that could cause catastrophic consequences for the whole region and the world.
Japan is deeply concerned about the attack by Iran against Israel using numerous drones and missiles, which put huge population in real danger and could further aggravate the current turmoil in the Middle East.
Japan strongly condemns such an escalation.
We are seriously concerned that this large military action will increase the already extremely heightened tensions in the Middle East and lead to a wider and more serious regional confrontation with global security and economic ramifications.
It is imperative for the Security Council to address this matter as a united body responsible for international peace and security to contain the risk of the region plunging into an abyss.
Japan has been strongly urging the parties concerned to calm down and de-escalate the situation, and exercise maximum restraint as Secretary-General has just mentioned.
Japan reiterates its determination to continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts in order to prevent a further deterioration.
We must end this vicious cycle of violence at the historical and critical juncture.
I thank you.
