Statement by H.E. Ambassador UMETSU Shigeru, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the UN Women Executive Board Annual Session 2025

2025/6/17

(As delivered)

Thank you, Madam President.

I would like to start by expressing my sincere appreciation to you for your introductory remarks and to Madam Executive Director, for her opening statement and comprehensive annual report.

As highlighted by the Executive Director, gender equality and women’s empowerment serve as multipliers for sustainable development.

I saw this first-hand when I observed UN Women's projects in Zimbabwe during the field visit I joined in May as a Bureau member. The official detailed report will be shared during the Second Regular session, but I would like to express my renewed conviction on this point and sincerely thank the Executive Board Secretariat and the Country and Regional Offices for their effective organization of this visit.

In response to the global challenges affecting the human security of women and girls, Japan has already contributed approximately 13 million USD to UN Women this year. The contribution supports global operations and projects, including a WPS program that assists the development of regional and national WPS Action Plans in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan commends UN Women’s ongoing efforts, particularly in responding to crisis situations and trusts that UN Women will continue its efforts in assisting the needs on the ground.

Madam President,

I am pleased to hear that the Strategic Plan 2022-2025 is bringing tangible results globally and improving organizational efficiencies and effectiveness. Building on the assessment of the current strategic plan, Japan expects that the next strategic plan will be more focused and impactful, further improving organizational performance. Japan reaffirms its support and commitment to engaging constructively in the discussions to finalize the plan.

Madam President,

As this year marks Beijing +30 and the 25th anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325, Japan reaffirms its unwavering dedication to working closely with UN Women, Member States, and stakeholders to implement the commitments outlined by these landmark frameworks.

Thank you.
