Statement by H.E. Ambassador UMETSU Shigeru, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the UN Women Executive Board First Regular Session 2026 (Opening Session)
2026/2/18

(As delivered)
Thank you, Mr. President.
At the outset, I would like to congratulate Mr. President and the other newly elected bureau members on assuming its important responsibility for this year. In particular, I wish to express my personal appreciation to the Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan, who is sitting next to me, taking over the position of Vice President of the APG from me. I assure the new bureau members of the full support and cooperation of my delegation throughout the year.
I would also like to thank the Executive Director for her comprehensive and informative opening remarks.
This past December, we were pleased to have the Executive Director visit Japan. At the first Next Generation Forum for Gender Equality held in Tokyo, she highlighted the crucial role young generations are expected to play in promoting gender equality under the current complex international situations. Her keynote speech and media engagements delivered a powerful message on the importance of gender equality to Japanese society—especially to the younger generation—making the visit highly inspiring and bringing it to a success.
Mr. President,
Japan commends UN Women’s continuous responses to threats around the world and reaffirms the vital role of UN Women’s triple mandate. Japan will continue to provide both core and non-core contributions to UN Women to further promote the empowerment of women and girls.
Japan has long valued human security and will continue to promote it as a pillar of its foreign policy. Human security’s emphasis on the protection and empowerment of individuals is consistent with UN Women’s efforts toward gender equality and women’s empowerment. Therefore, Japan encourages UN Women to further integrate this concept into its activities.
Finally, the upcoming CSW will focus on ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls and addressing structural barriers. Japan looks forward to sharing its experience alongside UN Women, member states, and civil society.
I thank you.
