World Tsunami Awareness Day (11/5)
Video message from Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro
Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s designation of November 5th as “World Tsunami Awareness Day”.

This date was chosen from a real story in Japan in 1854, when a farmer, predicting the imminence of tsunami striking the coast just after the earthquake, put fire on the newly harvested stack of rice straw to alert the villagers, urging them to evacuate, and saved so many lives.

In 2011, the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake inflicted massive damage in Japan. More than 21,000 people lost their lives. With the generous support of the international community, Japan has been able to build back better from the disaster. I wish to take this opportunity to express Japan’s deep gratitude for your kind support.

This recent experience reminds us of the importance of raising public awareness of the risk posed by tsunami. It also teaches us the significance of international cooperation to mitigate its impact in all phases of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

Japan will continue to share its expertise and lessons-learned and continue to work closely with countries in need to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

It is my sincere hope that  this World Tsunami Awareness Day will help remind the people of the human security risk that tsunami could pose in coastal areas all over the world. Japan will continue to be at the forefront of the international cooperation to address this challenge.
