Attendance of H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Ambassadorial Level Meeting on Institution-Building
2021/5/17

On 17 May, Ambassador Ishikane, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, attended the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC)’s meeting on institution-building, chaired by Egypt. The Commission listened to valuable lessons from briefers and had an active exchange of lessons learned and best practices among PBC members and partners.
Ambassador Ishikane stressed the importance of institution-building in fulfilling the needs of people, ensuring human security, addressing the root causes of grievances and fostering trust in society. In this regard, two examples of Japan’s work on institution-building were introduced.
1. JICA - Japan International Cooperation Agency’s work in “#SchoolForAll”. The community-based approach of this initiative has been promoting mutual trust and a culture of peace in the community and contributing to strengthening resilience. Having started with 23 schools in Niger in 2004, the School for All initiative has built or improved 53,000 schools in eight African countries in partnership with the World Bank, Pratham, J-PAL, and more.
2. Japan’s support in the criminal justice sector. Targeting seven francophone countries in West Africa and the Sahel, Japan has organized training courses for police, prosecutors and judges to enhance their expertise to address prevalent problems in their countries since 2013.
Japan is committed to further promoting support for institution-building in collaboration with our partners both on the ground and at the United Nations headquarters.
