Japan and UNDP partner to support sustainable food systems and improve livelihoods in Syria

On 31 January, H.E. Mr. OSUGA Takeshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, and Dr. Khalida BOUZAR, Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States, UNDP, signed the note on a grant aid "Strengthening Food Security in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor (UNDP Collaboration)" in the amount of JPY 990 million (approximately USD 8.6 million) at the UNDP headquarters in New York.

This cooperation will provide the most vulnerable households and communities in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor with the following services:
rehabilitation of irrigation systems, provision of agricultural equipment, mine risk avoidance education on access to farmland, livelihood support for vulnerable groups to earn income other than from agriculture, and support for the disabled. This cooperation is expected to contribute to the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Syria by enhancing food security and the resilience of the crisis-affected communities.
