Statement by H.E. Ambassador MIKANAGI Tomohiro, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Ambassadorial-Level Meeting on the Peaceful Settlement of Border Disputes in Central Asia
2025/12/15

(As delivered)
Thank you, Chair.
I express my gratitude to all the distinguished briefers, from the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, for their valuable inputs today.
The peaceful settlement of disputes is the fundamental principle of the UN Charter. In this regard, Japan warmly welcomes the signing of the border treaty between the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan as well as the border junction treaty between the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan this March. This demonstration of political will and mutual understanding is a good example for the resolution of disputes through dialogue.
I welcome the voluntary and proactive engagement of the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan with the PBC which provided us with an opportunity to learn from their experiences. In today’s meeting, the PBC could hear directly from the countries that demonstrated a peaceful spirit to engage in constructive dialogue which resulted in the historic agreements. Japan applauds the strong commitment of the three countries to promote peaceful relations and reinforce regional cooperation.
To conclude, I look forward to the continued success of the agreements signed by the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
I thank you.
