Statement by H.E. Ambassador MIKANAGI Tomohiro, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the UNDP Segment Interactive Dialogue with the UNDP Administrator, UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board
2025/1/30

Thank you, Mr. President.
We would also like to join others in sending our sincere condolences to the US mission and American people for yesterday's tragic accident.
Now, I would like to express my appreciation for Administrator Steiner’s comprehensive and insightful statement, which provided us with valuable insights into UNDP’s strategic direction for the coming year. I would also like to welcome the newly appointed Ms. Linda Maguire and Ms. Susan Brown.
As the international community faces complex crises, Japan highly values the role and functions that UNDP has been playing. UNDP's strength lies in its ability to provide solutions through an integrated approach to the ever-changing development needs of developing countries. Japan expects that this strength will be maintained in the next Strategic Plan and actively participates in the upcoming consultation process.
In light of the Administrator’s remarks, I would like to highlight three points on Japan’s priorities for cooperation with UNDP.
First, on the key areas of cooperation. We believe that this includes peacebuilding through the concept of HDP nexus and human security, in which UNDP has been playing a leading role within the United Nations system. In addition, we also perceive that UNDP holds an important role in areas such as artificial intelligence, digitalization, and climate change.
Second, on the importance of promoting public-private partnership. With regard to financing for sustainable development, we believe that as the importance of private finance for developing countries grows, it is crucial to explore innovative approaches to mobilize such resources. Japan greatly appreciates UNDP’s role as a catalyst in mobilizing private sector investment.
Third, we are grateful for UNDP’s sustained contribution and unwavering support to the African development. We hope that the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, TICAD 9, which will be held in August this year, will serve as an excellent platform to advance discussion on the key areas, including the importance of investment in human capital, promoting private investment, and enhancing transparency in development financing.
In conclusion, as UNDP commemorates its 60th anniversary this year, Japan greatly values our strategic partnership and looks forward to continued cooperation on a wide range of issues, including advancing human security and achieving the SDGs.
I thank you.
