Statement by H.E. Mr. KIMURA Tetsuya, Ambassador, Economic, Social and United Nations Management Affairs International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

2021/6/17
Good afternoon, excellencies, distinguished colleagues.

I would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Ambassador Squeff, SRSG Ms. Patten, and SRSG Ms. Gamba for convening this important event. Sexual violence in conflict is being exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, making our survivor-centered response all the more urgent. We need to foster an enabling environment for survivors, aiming at COVID mitigation and recovery.

In addition to core funding support given to the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, this year Japan provided 890,000USD to the UN Action Against Sexual Violence to support their conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) response services in Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan. This project will strengthen the quality and accessibility of life-saving psychosocial and health services for CRSV and GBV survivors and those at-risk, while building the capacity of psychosocial case managers to provide quality services and use innovative technological solutions such as remote case management services. Furthermore, this project will strengthen the capacity of GBV service providers to care for child survivors of CRSV and sexual abuse.

In this context I would like to stress the importance of fostering the resilience of individuals and communities through their empowerment from the perspective of Human Security, to mitigate the social, environmental and economic impacts. Japan stands ready to work closely with other Member States and partner organizations for better recovery from the pandemic.

Thank you.
