Statement by Mr. KAMIYA Yukio, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, at the Third Thematic Debate on “The Office of the President of the General Assembly” of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly

2020/6/9
(As delivered)

Thank you, Co-Chairs,

I would like to begin by thanking the co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group.

Strengthening the OPGA’s accountability, effectiveness, transparency and institutional memory is hugely important to enhancing the work of the General Assembly.

In particular, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the role and responsibility of the President of the General Assembly is becoming more and more important in steering the General Assembly.

In this regard, our delegation notes with appreciation the able leadership of PGA Muhammad-Bande, as well as the dedicated work of all OPGA colleagues throughout the 74th session.

Co-Chairs,

We acknowledge the importance of appropriately resourcing the OPGA in order to ensure the effective functioning of its vital role. Our delegation is also mindful that resources are limited and the need to maintain budgetary discipline remains high.

Bearing this in mind, and also taking note of the Assembly’s latest resolution on revitalization, 73/341, Japan has continued to support the Office through voluntary contributions to the Trust Fund.

Co-Chairs,

Let me finish by reiterating Japan’s continued commitment to support this Assembly and its highest office as an integral part of the revitalization process.

I thank you.
