Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Ambassadorial-Level Meeting of Sierra Leone Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission

2020/12/10
Thank you, Chair.

Thank you, DSG Mohammed, Minister Tunis, Minister Kai-Kai, and Ms. Edwin for their briefings.

It is a historic milestone for Sierra Leone so I join other colleagues in congratulating Sierra Leone and the people of Sierra Leone for the decision to move towards a more flexible engagement with the PBC. We commend Canada for its leadership in chairing the Configuration over this past decade.

We are grateful to Sierra Leone for sharing its roadmap for further engagement with the PBC. Especially, we are pleased to see the Government's commitment to implementing the National Development Plan.

As highlighted in the roadmap and as DSG Mohammed pointed out, it is of great importance to build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. This has to be done with national ownership as Minister Tunis pointed out. We believe that the ongoing efforts to ensure security and justice for all as well as to deliver basic services to those in need will help increase public trust in the government.

We are pleased to see that the Government puts strong emphasis on the protection and empowerment of its people. In particular, I hope no effort will be spared in the promotion of full, equal, and meaningful participation of women in the decision-making processes.

We are confident that Sierra Leone will overcome the challenges created by COVID-19 and build back better with the resilience it has already demonstrated in recovering from the conflict as well as in coping with the past public health emergencies caused by Ebola virus.

Japan stands by the people of Sierra Leone. Our cooperation with Sierra Leone and UN agencies under the COVID-19 situation demonstrates our determination in that regard and we will be continuing to do so with bearing in mind the priorities that had been set forth by the Ministers.

The PBC’s door is always open for Sierra Leone whenever they wish to engage. Moreover, I would like to ask you, Minister Tunis and Minister Kai-Kai, to return from time to time to the PBC to share your good practices and success stories, which will positively inspire other countries affected by conflict and fragility.

I thank you, Mr. Chair.
