Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Joint meeting of the Group of Friends of Afghanistan and the Group of Friends of Women in Afghanistan

2021/6/16
Good morning, distinguished colleagues.

I would like to express my appreciation to Ambassador Bob Rae, Ambassador Adela Raz, and Ambassador Barbara Woodward for convening this joint meeting of the Group of Friends of Afghanistan and the Group of Friends of Women in Afghanistan under the important theme of women’s participation in the peace process. I would also like to thank Ms. Deborah Lyons for her informative briefing.

Today, I am glad to share an update. Japan has just joined the Group of Friends of Women in Afghanistan. We look forward to working closely with other members to promote the active and full participation of women in sustainable development and peace in Afghanistan.

Japan has been making collaborative efforts with the Government of Afghanistan in this endeavour, and one of the examples is the technical assistance to empower female police officers in Afganistan to strengthen their capacities to protect victims and survivors of gender-based violence, which we started in 2014. This resonates with the Government of Afghanistan's continuing efforts to increase the number, and deployment of female police officers, and to build their capacities as agent of peace.

Japan strongly believes that a sustainable peace in Afghanistan can only be achieved by a political settlement that reflects the voices of all segments of society. Japan continues to support the Government of Afghanistan in partnership with other Member States in their efforts to advance an inclusive peace process.

Thank you.
