Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, at the Security Council (Adoption), EOV after the vote on the extension of UNITAMS mandate
2023/6/2
Thank you, Madame President.
I would also like to thank the United Kingdom, the penholder, for their tireless work to consolidate the Council’s position.
Clashes continue in Sudan despite repeated ceasefire agreements between the parties. Currently, there is no clear positive sign of a return to the political process. The humanitarian situation in Sudan and its neighbors is worsening. Japan continues to call on the parties to immediately end hostilities and uphold the Jeddah Declaration and Agreement on a Short-Term Ceasefire and Humanitarian Arrangements.
Japan voted in favor of the draft resolution because it is important to maintain UNITAMS given such difficult circumstances. We are encouraged by the fact that the Council could speak in a united voice in this regard.
Madame President,
Japan was appalled by the letter from Sudan requesting the removal of SRSG Perthes. We reiterate our strong support for UNITAMS, and we call on all the parties in Sudan to ensure that the Mission can carry out its mandate unhindered.
To conclude, Japan reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the Mission can continue to fulfill its mandate.
I thank you.
