Message by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

2022/5/29
1. On the occasion of the International Day of United Nations' Peacekeepers, Japan extends its respect to all peacekeepers for their commitment to maintaining international peace and security. During the 74 years, since the establishment of United Nations Peacekeeping operations, many peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives. We once again remember their service and offer our deep condolences to their loved ones.

2. Japan is proud that fallen Captain Abdelrazakh Hamit Bahar from Chad is honoured with the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal. Japan appreciates his exceptional courage performed in an environment of extreme danger, beyond the call of duty, while serving humanity.

3. Japan would like to congratulate Major Winnet Zharare from Zimbabwe for being honoured with 2021 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. Japan supports the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and praises the critical contribution of female peacekeepers on the ground.

4. Since 1992, Japan has provided more than 12,500 personnel to 29 missions including 13 United Nations peacekeeping operations. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the enactment of the International Peace Cooperation Act. Currently, we are contributing staff officers serving in UNMISS. We have directly supported capacity-building of more than 1,200 African and Asian peacekeepers and will continue to promote Triangular Partnership Programme. Japan will continue to support United Nations Peacekeeping operations and remain a proactive contributor to peace.
