Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

2021/5/29
1. On the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Japan expresses its respect to all peacekeepers for their commitment to maintaining international peace and security. During the 73 years since the establishment of United Nations Peacekeeping operations, many peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives. We once again remember their service and offer our deep condolences to their loved ones.

2. Japan would like to congratulate Major Stelyne Buyaki Nyaboga of the Kenyan Army for being honoured with 2020 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. Japan supports the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and praises the critical contribution of female peacekeepers on the ground.

3. Since 1992, Japan has provided more than 12,500 personnel to 28 missions. Today, we are contributing staff officers serving in UNMISS and also support capacity-building for African and Asian peacekeepers. As a troop and financial contributor as well as training and capacity-building provider, Japan will continue to support United Nations Peacekeeping operations and remain a proactive contributor to peace."
