Statement by H.E. Ambassador ISHIKANE Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers
2020/5/29
1. On the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Japan expresses its respect to all peacekeepers for their commitment to maintaining international peace and security. During the 72 years since the first establishment of United Nations Peacekeeping operations, many peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives. We once again remember their service and offer our deep condolences to their loved ones.
2. Japan would like to congratulate Commander Carla Monteiro de Castro Araujo of the Brazilian Navy and Major Suman Gawani of the Indian Army for being honored with the United Nations Military Gender Advocate award. Japan supports the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and praises the critical contribution of female peacekeepers on the ground.
3. Since 1992, Japan has provided more than 12,500 personnel to 28 missions. Today, we are contributing staff officers serving in UNMISS and we also support capacity-building for African and Asian peacekeepers. As a troop and financial contributor and training and capacity-building provider, Japan will continue to support United Nations Peacekeeping operations under our policy of Proactive Contribution to Peace.
