Reception to Celebrate the 2025 Japan Self-Defense Forces Day

2025/11/7
On 7 November, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations hosted the 2025 Self-Defense Forces Day reception, with the attendance of Mr. Atul Khare, Under-Secretary General for Operational Support, Lt. General Cheryl Pearce, Acting Military Adviser, and military advisors from other Permanent Missions.

Since its establishment in 1954, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) began participating in peacekeeping operations (PKO) as a new task in 1992. Japan has deployed units to Cambodia, Nepal, and Timor-Leste, among others. At present, Japan contributes mainly by dispatching staff officers to mission headquarters and supporting capacity-building initiatives, including through the Triangular Partnership Programme (TPP).

In his remarks, Ambassador Yamazaki emphasized that, amid the challenging environment surrounding peacekeeping, winning the trust of host nations is essential. He noted that the steady and sincere efforts of the JSDF have earned trust over the years, underscoring the continued importance of dedicated and respectful engagement on the ground. He also expressed high expectations for the first female Defense Advisor.

USG Kahle expressed his appreciation for the significant contributions made by seconded JSDF officers to the UN Secretariat and for Japan’s support, including through the TPP.
