Peace Bell Ceremony

On September 20th, the annual Peace Bell Ceremony was held in the Japanese Garden at the United Nations Headquarters and Ambassador Bessho and Madame Bessho attended this event.
 
The ceremony was attended by the H.E. Mr. António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, H.E. Professor. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President-elect of the 74th session of the united Nations General Assembly, Ms. Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications along with the members of the UN Secretariat.

Ms. Midori Goto (Violinist) and Mr. Yo-Yo Ma (Cellist), the UN Messengers of Peace, as well as Permanent Representatives and members of missions, also attended the event and celebrated International Day of Peace.

Following the performance by the UN Choir, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the 74th Session of the General Assembly, H.E. Professor. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, gave remarks and rang the Peace Bell to commemorate the International Day of Peace with stronger hope for World Peace. The Ceremony, cerebrated in serene atmosphere, was concluded by the performance by The Tarumi Violin Children’s Foundation for the Arts.
 
※  The Peace Bell was originally cast from coins collected from people of 60 different countries. It was donated to the United Nations by the United Nations Association of Japan on June 8th, 1954. It has become a tradition to ring the bell on the occasion of the International Day of Peace (21 September).
