Peace Bell Ceremony and Ceremonial Tea Offering for Peace

On September 13th, the annual Peace Bell Ceremony was held near the Japanese Garden at the United Nations Headquarters and Ambassador ISHIKANE and Madame ISHIKANE attended this event.
Other attendees of the ceremony were H.E. Mr. António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, and Ms. Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the 78th Session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, gave remarks and rang the Peace Bell (*) to commemorate the International Day of Peace with strong hopes for World Peace.
Following the Peace Bell Ceremony was the Ceremonial Tea Offering for Peace, which was held in the Qatar Lounge at the United Nations Headquarters.
The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Ambassador and Madame Ishikane, Permanent Representatives, along with members of the UN Secretariat. The total number of participants who joined the ceremony was around 100.
After remarks were given by Ambassador Ishikane, Dr. Genshitsu Sen, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, and Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, the “Tea Offering Ceremony” was conducted by Dr. Sen. Following this, the tea was served to all participants and the Ceremony was celebrated and concluded in a peaceful atmosphere.
*The Peace Bell was originally cast from coins collected from 60 different countries. It was donated to the United Nations by the United Nations Association of Japan on June 8th, 1954. It has become a tradition to ring the bell on the International Day of Peace (21 September).
