International Group of Eminent Persons for a World Without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP) The 2026 NPT Review Conference Side Event

2026/4/27

On April 27, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations hosted a side event “International Conference of Eminent Persons Toward a ‘World Without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP)’ on the margins of the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Dr. KUNIMITSU Ayako, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered opening remarks, stating that dialogue and initiatives involving both nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states, as exemplified by the IGEP are indispensable precisely because divisions and confrontations within the international community are deepening.

Additionally, Mr. Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations and President of the 2026 NPT Review Conference, and Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs gave their remarks.

This was followed by a presentation on the recommendations of the IGEP, as well as a panel discussion among participants, including IGEP members, experts, and government officials, based on the recommendations.
