On 11 December 2002, the General Assembly of the United Nations (Second Committee) unanimously adopted two resolutions sponsored by Japan, "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" and "International Strategy for Disaster Reduction".
The resolution "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" draws attention to the important role that education plays in sustainable development and requests that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promote and develop a detailed international implementation scheme for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The resolution "International Strategy for Disaster Reduction" concerns itself with increasing awareness of the importance of disaster reduction strategies, as well as arrangements for the World Conference on Disaster Reduction to be held in Kobe, Japan in 2005.
Japan, as the sponsor of these resolutions, will continue to actively promote the causes of education for sustainable development and disaster reduction.
