Japan pushes the discussion forward on the PBC’s advisory role to the Security Council

21 November 2012

Ambassador Nishida chaired the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Working Group on Lessons Learned (WGLL) meeting at the United Nations Headquarters on Wednesday, 21 November 2012.  The theme of the meeting was “The relationship between the PBC and the Security Council: Possible areas and situations for advice” with a focus on UN Mission transition in three countries on the PBC agenda, namely Burundi, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Examples of the past and current transitions and the PBC’s role therein was introduced by the two panelists, Mr. Nega Berhanemeskel, Deputy Head of Mission and Chief of Staff for United Nations Integrated Peace building Office in Sierra Leone and Mr. Edmond Mulet, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.  With active participation by a number of member states as well as the Secretariat and UN agencies, the meeting sought to clarify where the PBC's advice should focus in order to enhance substantive collaboration with the Security Council.

The Chair will soon summarize the outcome of the discussion in the Chair’s summary and the Initial Findings document to be circulated among the whole membership.
