On September 21st, the Peace Bell Ceremony was held in the Rose Garden at the United Nations Headquarters. Ambassador Nishida and Madame Nishida attended this annual event.
H.E. Mr.Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Madame Ban, H.E. Mr. Vuk Jeremic, President of the 67th Session of the General Assembly, UN Messengers of Peace, Michael Douglas, Dr. Jane Goodall, Monique Coleman, Forest Whitaker, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Professor Elie Wiesel, as well as many UN staff members and diplomats attended the ceremony to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Following a moment of silence, the Secretary-General rang the Peace Bell.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Nishida and Madame Nishida interacted with the United Nations Messengers of Peace, UN Ambassadors of Friendship, the UN Youth Champion, the Secretary-General, and the President of the General Assembly.
The Peace Bell was cast from coins collected by people of 60 different countries and was presented to the United Nations by the United Nations Association of Japan in June 1954. It has become a tradition to ring the bell every year on the International Day of Peace.
