On 9 May 2008, the Permanent Mission of Japan hosted the annual Japanese tea ceremony in front of the Peace Bell in the United Nations.
Mr. Yoshihiro Terazono, a master of chado, or way of tea, from the Urasenke Chanoyu Center of New York led Permanent Representatives of several Member States and Under-Secretaries-Generals of the United Nations in the way of tea. Two sessions were hosted by Ambassador and Mrs. Yukio Takasu, and Ambassador and Mrs. Takahiro Shinyo.
The honored guests enjoyed traditional Japanese sweets before tasting the Japanese tea, prepared in the same style as in 15th century Japan, while viewing the Peace Bell garden. Approximately 30 guests attended the two ceremonies.
The tradition of Urasenke has become the largest tradition of chado in Japan and around the world. The Urasenke Chanoyu Center of New York has been practicing the way of tea for more than 40 years.
