On 12 December 2006, the Permanent Mission of Japan hosted a jazz concert at the United Nations to mark the 50th Anniversary of Japan's Membership in the United Nations and a reception to celebrate the Emperor’s Birthday as well as to commemorate the 50th Anniversay.
Over 150 guests listened to the music of Ms. Toshiko Akiyoshi, acclaimed composer/arranger and pianist, accompanied by the Quartet featuring Mr. Lew Tabackin on flute and tenor saxophone, Mr. Paul Gill on bass, and Mr. Mark Taylor on drums.
The band played a selection of songs composed by Ms. Akiyoshi, including, “Long Yellow Road”, “Kogun”, “Sumie”, “The Village”, “Lady Liberty”, and “Hope”.
Following the concert, the Mission held a reception which was attended by over 550 distinguished guests.
