The Permanent Mission welcomed four Peace Messengers from the City of Yokohama--students selected through a speech contest on the theme of peace--for a meeting with Ambassador Toshiro Ozawa. The students, ranging in age from 11 to 15, introduced themselves and expressed their desire to learn more about the workings of the United Nations so that they could share their knowledge upon their return to Japan. Ambassador Ozawa spoke to the young diplomats on the structure of the United Nations and Japan's role, then fielded their questions. The students will also meet with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to present a donation of approximately US$100,000 from the residents of the City of Yokohama to the United Nations Children's Fund.
