On 28 October 2003, the Permanent Mission welcomed four Peace Messengers from the City of Yokohama—elementary and junior high school students selected through a speech contest—for a meeting with Ambassador Toshiro Ozawa. After the students introduced themselves, expressing their desire to learn more about the workings of the United Nations so that they could pass on that knowledge to their classmates after they return, Ambassador Ozawa spoke to the young diplomats on the structure of the United Nations and Japan's role, then fielded their questions. The students earlier visited the office of Under-Secretary-General Ms. Louise Frechette, presenting her with a donation to the United Nations Children's Fund from the residents of the City of Yokohama totaling over US$100,000.
