On March 6, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN together with Japanese NGOs co-organized the side-event “Situation and Measures to Eliminate Violence against Women.”
Over 100 people from more than 30 different countries participated in the event which was a part of a two-week session of the Commission of the Status of Women (CSW) held at United Nations Headquarters.
“Japan supports the ‘Say NO – UniTE to End Violence against Women’ initiative. As one of our efforts to materialize our commitment, last week we decided to contribute 1 million US dollars to support the ‘UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women,’ of which Japan was one of the main and initial supporters.” Ambassador Jun Yamazaki stated during his remarks at the side-event.
Later that evening, Ambassador Tsuneo Nishida, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN, hosted a reception on the occasion of the 57th session of the CSW. Ms. Hiroko Hashimoto, the head of Japanese delegation, and Ms. Masako Hiramatsu, representing the Japanese NGOs which co-organized the side-event, made remarks to the guests in celebration of the progress made towards gender equality and the renewed commitment to end violence against women. |
